A growing body of evidence suggests that the increasing numbers of medical tests and procedures drive up health care costs and, above all, can be harmful to patients. Even seemingly safe diagnostic modalities can be potentially harmful or even fatal if they lead to a cascade of additional unnecessary testing and invasive procedures with predictable complication rates.
